Best Mulled Wine Recipe
Ingredients
~750 ml bottle red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir or a good red blend
~ 2 cups of fresh apple cider (not from concentrate)
~1 cup of brandy
~ 3 Tablespoon Honey
~ 5 whole cloves
~ 1 star anise
~ 2-3 sticks of cinnamon
~ 2 Tablespoons of orange zest
~ Juice of 1 orange
You can place your spices in a cheesecloth bag to avoid having to strain the Mulled wine prior to servicing.
Place all ingredients in a saucepan or slow-cooker and heat. Do not let it boil. Serve with a slice of orange and cinnamon stick if desired. Enjoy!
Mulling Spices
- ~2 cups packed brown sugar
- ~1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ~2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
- ~2 teaspoons dried orange peel
- ~1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ~1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Place all of the above ingredients into a food processor and blend completely. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1 year.
In a saucepan, pour in 1- 750 milliliter bottle of your favorite dry red wine. In a piece of cheesecloth pour 1/2 cup of mulling spices. Tie the cheesecloth to seal in the spices. Place the spice bag into the wine and heat all together until warm, do not boil. Remove bag with spices and pour wine into mugs. Serve warm.
Mulled wine with optional liqueur

- 1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
- 2-4 tablespoons sweetener such as maple syrup, honey or sugar -OPTIONAL
- 1 orange, sliced into 1/4 inch slices
- 6-8 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- 1/4 cup of your favorite liquor, like amaretto, brandy, campari or cointreau might be a flavorful option– OPTIONAL
- Garnishes – orange slices, cranberries, lemon slices, lime slices, cinnamon stick or star anise-Optional
DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, and heat until bubbles appear around the edge of the pan. DO NOT BOIL!. Simmer for about 15 minutes or put in a slow cooker on low until warm. j
Strain out the spices, Serve warm with garnish if desired
